Dorka Ellis Talks About the First Commandment

The Sabbath services on September 15, 2018 began with a song service led by Leilani (junior) and Kaydence (9th gradr) accompanied by Jacqueline Miller on the piano.  The opening song was “Immortal, Invisible, God Only One”.

Sarah Carpenter welcomed everyone. Katy Bodden read the mission story titled “I Don’t Want to Teach”.  In Mongolia, this missionary wife didn’t want to teach but worked with the neighborhood children. Then her husband transferred to the Philippines to complete an advanced degree, and the wife studied education.  Then when they returned to Mongolia, the wife became the teacher for the first Adventist school in the country. The school is growing fast; there are now plans for a boarding school.

She then called for the Laurelbrook Missions Offering, which was collected by Leilani and Heissel (juniors) and which goes to support Laurelbrook mission trips.  Edvan (junior) read the scripture reading.  Barbara Ellis played her harp for special music.

Dorka Ellis had the theme talk on the first commandment. Daryll Ellishad the closing prayer and announced the classes.  James Brenneman led the lesson study in the main sanctuary, Rich Sutton the class in the boys’ dorm lobby, and Pedro Arce in the CNA [house.

Following are a few notes from Dorka Ellis’ presentation:

  1. Exodus 19:4-6 “4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and [how] I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself. 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth [is] mine: 6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These [are] the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.”
  2. Exodus 19:8 (people’s response) “And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.”
  3. The people needed to be sanctified to appear before the Lord.
  4. Exodus 19:16-25 “16 ¶ And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that [was] in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. 19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. 20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses [up] to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. 21 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. 22 And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them. 23 And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. 24 And the LORD said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them. 25 So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them.”
  5. The first commandment was no other gods before the Lord. This was an acknowledgment of God’s supremacy in the universe and the fact that He really is the only God in the universe.
  6. There is nothing more degrading than for a person to worship gods other than God.
  7. God didn’t want any of the physical gods that people worshipped back then and carried around with them. Do we have physical gods we carry around today?
  8. The only safeguard we have against other gods is to pray to God via Jesus.
  9. Our heart has an empty space that can only be filled by God.
  10. We benefit through worshipping God by eternal life and by the love that is returned from God.
  11. John 8:29 “And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.”
  12. We have to have a connection with God to do this.
  13. God gives us the ability to properly connect with Him.
