Harvey Steck Focused on God's Way of Dealing With Sickness

The Laurelbrook Seventh-day Adventist Church service on August 11, 2018 began with Jeremy Westcott welcoming everyone and making a few announcements. There will be lunch in the cafeteria today. Prayer meeting this coming Wednesday will be directed by Pastor Richie Perez.

Samantha (junior) played an introit. The congregation had a silent invocation and then sang “Baptize Us Today”.  Jeremy Westcott had the main prayer; the congregation responded with “Hear Our Prayer, O Lord”.

 

Yzzynne and Kelly-Ann (9^th graders) then called for the offering.  Rich Sutton and Clifton Brandt collected the morning offerings; the loose offering went to the world budget (specifically for the three big U.S. Adventist universities).  The congregation sang the doxology, and Haydee (junior) prayed for the offering. 

 

Kaydence (9^th grader) told the children a story about a young man who flagged down a river steamboat.  When someone wondered how he did it he said that the captain was his father. So God is our Father who looks out for us.

Isaac (elementary) read the scripture reading – Matthew 9:35 “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.”

Edvan (junior) played his saxophone for the special music. Harvey Steck, a visiting missionary working in Thailand, had the sermon. The congregation sang “The Great Physician Now is Near”.   Rich Sutton had the closing prayer.

Following are some notes on the sermon:

 

1. Matthew 9:35 “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.”
2. 1 Peter 2:21-22 “21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:”
3. The couple worked at a mission called “Sunshine Orchard”, but the mission was turned over to the native peoples do the Stecks went to the Korean Sanitarium to get further health information so they could start a health work in a new place.
4. Ellen White, Medical Ministry, p. 24 – those who work in medical missionary work represent Christ. 
5. We cannot represent Christ if self dominates us.
6. Ministry of Healing, p. 143- Christ mingled with people, took care of their needs, and then asked them to follow Him.
7. Are you with your friends for their good or just mingling with them?
8. Medical Ministry, p. 20 – Christ came to heal every weak character.
9. Testimonies, Vol. 7, p. 62 – all church members should take hold of this work. The world is full of people who need the message we have.
10. Counsels on Health, p. 212 – the great emphasis should be the healing the gospel can bring to those who are sick as well as the physical healing Christ has to give
11. Ministry of Healing has three emphases – health principles, spiritual and mental healing (40% of the book), and helping the sick and the unfortunate.
12. Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 443 – 90% of the diseases have their origin in the mind. Sometimes people get sick due to a misunderstanding of God and His character.
13. Ministry of Healing, p. 241 – mental depression often brings on physical diseases.
14. Medical Ministry, p. 223 – 90% of those who are sick can get better if they simply practice the health principles they know.
15. Many times, treatment starts with a period of fasting and then continues with a vegan diet.
16. Ministry of Healing, p. 77 – the paralytic first wanted forgiveness of his sins before his physical problem was taken care of.  This peace of mind helped solve the physical problem.
17. Ministry of Healing, p. 144 – God often reaches hearts through our efforts to relieve physical suffering.
18. Ministry of Healing, p. 128 – people should study the workings of the human body and the influence of the mind on the body
19. Ministry of Healing, p. 241 – a contented mind and a cheerful spirit is health to the body and strength to the soul. Mental influence is a good way to combat disease.
20. Ministry of Healing, p. 247 – God’s love can give vigor to the mind and life and energy to the body. Surrender to God’s love.
21. Ministry of Healing, p. 251 – mental, spiritual, and physical health comes from a spirit of gratitude and praise.
22. Colossians 3:15 “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”
23. Isaiah 58 gives the remedy for physical and mental diseases by denying ourselves that gives us a sense of right doing.
24. Ministry of Healing, p. 265 – God wants us to spend time outdoors.
25. Ministry of Healing, p. 315 – a meat diet and other things as well affects a person physically and mentally.
26. Ministry of Healing, p. 246 – a person’s will rightly directed and awake helps that person resist all types of diseases.  Each person who is sick should make up their minds to be well.
27. In our walk with the Lord, let’s think about the connection between body and mind.
