Haniel Garcia Talked About "Jesus AT the Wheel"

                                                                                                                                       Audio

The Laurelbrook Seventh-day Adventist Church service on July 14, 2018 began with Rich Sutton welcoming everyone and making a few announcements. He mentioned that the English radio station in Dayton is working well.  With Richie Perez, the new campus chaplain, available, they are looking into beginning a Spanish radio station.

Jara (junior) played an introit. The congregation had a silent invocation and then sang “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”, led by Rebecca Nowdesha.   Haniel Garcia had the main prayer; the congregation responded with “Hear Our Prayer, O Lord”.

Rich Sutton then called for the offering.  Clifton Brandt and Hiram (2018 junior) then collected the morning offerings; the loose offering went to women’s ministries.  The congregation sang the doxology, and Rich Sutton prayed for the offering.

Rich Sutton told the children a story about a family who moved into his house when their house burned. The children intermixed well. One day the boys were doing gymnastics inside upstairs.  His son Jeff told his father he needed to talk to him right now.  In fact, he insisted on it.  He was doing flips and put his feet through the drywall.  The other boys tried to cover the accident up, but Jeff confessed right away.

Another story – a boy playing in the garden took his sing shot and hit a chicken, killing it. He buried it, thinking no one would know. His sister knew and made the young boy do all sorts of things so she wouldn’t tell.  Finally, he told his grandmother the truth.  Tell the truth right away.

Rich Sutton then read Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”  The congregation then sang “Watch Ye Saints”.

Haniel Garcia and Yuli (junior) and Eldric (sophomore) discussed the topic “Jesus AT the Wheel”. The congregation sang “Be Still, My Soul”.   Haniel Garcia had the closing prayer.

Personnel Other Than Students:

Haniel Garcia – 2016 Laurelbrook graduate / his father often helped Rich cross the Mexican border / plans on attending Southwestern this fall

Rebecca Nowdesha – assistant girls’ dean

Rich Sutton – Laurelbrook president

Following are some notes on the sermon by Haniel and students Yuli and Eldric:

  1. Every moment we are making decisions.
  2. Big decisions include marriage and our career and whom to marry.
  3. Genesis 19:4-10 “4 ¶ But before they lay down, the men of the city, [even] the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: 5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where [are] the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. 6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, 7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. 8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as [is] good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. 9 And they said, Stand back. And they said [again], This one [fellow] came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, [even] Lot, and came near to break the door. 10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.”
  4. Lot has some strangers to protect over his own daughters.
  5. 20 years before – Genesis 13:5-13 “5 ¶ And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents. 6 And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. 7 And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land. 8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we [be] brethren. 9 [Is] not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if [thou wilt take] the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if [thou depart] to the right hand, then I will go to the left. 10 ¶ And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it [was] well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, [even] as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. 11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. 12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched [his] tent toward Sodom. 13 But the men of Sodom [were] wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.”
  6. Lot knew the wickedness of Sodom but went anyway, not caring about their lifestyle. Eventually he was inside the city.
  7. Three results – Lot lost his profession, leading to two idolatrous nations / he lost his wife / he lost his daughters.
  8. Lot lost everything.
  9. Have your decisions led you to God or away from God?
  10. [Eldric] Nadab and Abu got to drink alcohol in the camp, went into the sanctuary with strange fire, and were consumed by the flames.
  11. King David was a good king but made some bad decisions, especially when he first saw Bathsheba naked on her roof. The result was a suicide mission for her husband, the prophet Nathan told King David about it, and the king was punished by God.
  12. Samson judged Israel for 20 years with many bad decisions. He trusted Delilah and told her the secret of his strength.   He was relieved of his eyes.
  13. Jacob’s sons burned out a city out of revenge for what was done to their sister.
  14. Ellen White says we have nothing to fear for the future if we follow God.
  15. [Yuli] Joseph always made the right decisions – when his father gave him the robe of many colors, his brothers were jealous.
  16. Proverbs 14:30 “A sound heart [is] the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.”
  17. Joseph’s brothers hated him so when he went to see them he was sold into slavery.
  18. Potiphar’s wife tempted him, but Joseph’s shield was his firmness about standing for the right. His example we should all follow so we can have victory through God’s power.
  19. Joseph is a prototype of Jesus.  He had total confidence in God’s Word and in His power.
  20. [Haniel] Bible verses help with decisions – Isaiah 30:21 “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This [is] the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.”
  21. Psalm 32:8 “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”
  22. Before you make a life decision, turn to God and His Word.
