Cheryl Orser Talks About True Freedom in Christ

Sabbath services on January 2, 2016
began with a piano introit by Penny Thomas. Terrence White led the song service, accompanied by Penny Thomas. The opening song was “Trust and Obey”. Cheryl Orser welcomed everyone and said that her theme was about “True Freedom in Christ”.

Beth Brandt read John 8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

Gerry Lewis read a mission story from Rwanda. One man survived a massacre at the Adventist hospital and church by hiding among the dead.  He survived only by God’s grace; the massacre went on for three months. The government offered mercy to the ordinary people caught up in the massacre but convicted the leaders of crimes against humanity. Today the hospital has a nursing school again. The 13th Sabbath offering this quarter goes towards helping this medical complex start a new medical school.

Gerry Lewis then called for the Laurelbrook Missions Offering, which was collected by Dyaine and Sarah (juniors) and which goes to support Laurelbrook mission trips.  Jairit (senior) and Citlali (junior) played “It Is Well” on their clarinets, accompanied by Samantha (9th grader) on the piano, for special music.

Cheryl Orser had the superintendent’s remarks on “True Freedom in Christ”. The congregation then sang “Jesus Savior, Pilot Me”.  She then had closing prayer.  The congregation then became two Sabbath School classes taught by Elizabeth Castle in the church sanctuary and by Bob and Michelle Gustafson “behind the glass” at the back of the church sanctuary.
Following are a few notes from the theme talk by Cheryl Orser:
  1. People seek freedom and happiness in all the wrong places.
  2. James 1:25 “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth [therein], he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”
  3. John 8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
  4. A Christian cannot be bothered by this life since he/she should be a corpse as far as sin is concerned.
  5. God lets us encounter problems and persecution to advance us in the work of character building.
