Shaun Craig Urges Concentration on God

The 2015 Baccalaureate service began at 11:00 a.m. in the academy auditorium with a piano prelude by Caleb (senior) titled “Andante Religioso”.  David Crawford, Luke’s father, had the invocation.  Ron Oxentenko, outgoing Laurelbrook business manager and Becky’s father, welcomed everyone.

The congregation then sang “O For That Flame of Living Fire”.  Brigitte Wehril, Sarah’s mother, had the Morning Prayer, translated by her daughter Sarah (senior). Jose Herrera, Laurelbrook’s IT specialist and Jacqueline’s father, called for the offering.  Reilly, Alec (junior), Jose (junior), and Luke (senior) collected the offering, accompanied by Caleb on the piano and by Cheyna Ashe (girls’ dean).

Vonee’ Hemans, Cheyna Ashe (girls’ deans), Stephany (junior), and Suwannee Brown sang for special music.  Shawn Craig - the online course coordinator for Wildwood Lifestyle Center in Wildwood, Georgia - gave the Baccalaureate Address on the subject “Lean In”. The congregation sang a hymn of commitment – “I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go”, accompanied by Caleb on the piano. Shawn Craig had the benediction, and the congregation exited to a postlude by Caleb.

Following are notes on Shawn Craig’s Baccalaureate Address:
  1. Jesus is speaking to Jews, who probably had the first five books of the Bible memorized by age 10. The rest was memorized by age 15.  The leaders memorized commentaries as well.
  2. John 5:39 “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”
  3. Jesus sees the Scriptures as a unified whole talking about one person – Jesus.
  4. Could we be living a happy, contented life and missing much that God wants to teach us?
  5. Being blind from birth keeps a person from worrying about what he/she is missing in life.
  6. Isaiah 1-5 contains mostly woes.
  7. Isaiah 6:1-5 “1 ¶ In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, [is] the LORD of hosts: the whole earth [is] full of his glory. 4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 ¶ Then said I, Woe [is] me! for I am undone; because I [am] a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”
  8. Isaiah is getting a “wow” moment.
  9. Isaiah 6:6-8 “6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, [which] he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: 7 And he laid [it] upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. 8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here [am] I; send me.”
  10. Even Isaiah, as close as he was to the Lord, was missing something.
  11. Going back to your old elementary school can be like a miniature experience with everything smaller than you remembered it.
  12. Do we fit God to our experiences? Experiences with God continue to become bigger and deeper.  You cannot exhaust the bigness and greatness of God.
  13. Philippians 3:1-2 “1 ¶ Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed [is] not grievous, but for you [it is] safe. 2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.”  Beware of those who are trying to trip you up.
  14. Philippians 3:3 “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.”
  15. In other words, the believers did not believe in good works saving them.
  16. Philippians 3:4-6 “4 ¶ Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: 5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, [of] the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; 6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.” I have done all these good works.
  17. Philippians 3:7 “But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.”  Good things can be used by Satan to prop up our pride.
  18. Philippians 3:8 “Yea doubtless, and I count all things [but] loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them [but] dung, that I may win Christ.”  I would count my entire life as a waste so I might know a little bit about Jesus.
  19. Philippians 3:9-10 “9 ¶ And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.”
  20. “Know” means beyond the intellectual, an experience far beyond.
  21. What is this treasure?  It’s you and your preparation for eternal life and how you relate to Jesus.
  22. Jesus didn’t want to sit on a throne in heaven and have the human race lost. He couldn’t live without us.
  23. The important thing in the universe is Jesus and how you relate to Him.
  24. Philippians 3:11-12 “11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. 12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.”
  25. Philippians 3:13-14 “13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but [this] one thing [I do], forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
  26. Paul felt he must put away all the things he had done in his life and look forward, not backwards.
  27. A runner may lean forward till he almost falls – and wins the race.
  28. Paul leans in – completely dedicated to the course he is pursuing.
  29. Ellen White says in Education that God has given us the aim of finishing the Lord’s work.
  30. Whatever God calls you to be, you should do it wholeheartedly for the honor of God.
  31. The way Jesus lived His life preached the fact that He was the Messiah.
  32. Preach the gospel – and if you need to speak do so.   Your life will be a sermon to all who meet you.
  33. Hebrews 12:1 “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,”
  34. You focus your attention on what God wants us to do so others can see Jesus through our lives.
  35. What’s holding you back from whatever God wants you to do?  Lay aside these hindrances.
  36. John 14:1-6 “1 ¶ Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if [it were] not [so], I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, [there] ye may be also. 4 ¶ And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. 5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
  37. Jesus says that you already know the way to heaven. He says He is only way to get through the end.
  38. You’re already on the road and with Jesus.  He will give us everything we need to go through to the kingdom.
  39. He has given all – we need to give all the hindrances to Jesus that might hinder us from fulfilling His will.
